Withdrawal from Paris Pact "Diminishes America's Leadership Role on the World Stage."

Statement

Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.), a member of the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, today issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced the United States would with withdraw from the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change:

"If America is going to be a global leader, it needs to have a seat at the table when issues and agreements with global implications are discussed," said Congressman Meehan. "The Paris Agreement isn't perfect. But by abandoning it, America is relinquishing that seat at the table. It calls into question our commitment to protecting and preserving the environment. And it forfeits our ability to drive countries like China and India to reduce their carbon footprint and compete on a level playing field. Ultimately, this disappointing decision diminishes America's leadership role on the world stage."

Last month, Meehan and 20 of his colleagues wrote President Trump, urging him to maintain America's commitment to the Paris Agreement. The full text of the letter can be found here.

Meehan is also one of 19 Republican co-sponsors of a resolution authored by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Ny.) which calls on the House of Representatives to commit to working on economically viable solutions that address the risks of climate change.
